UQ researchers awarded $5.5M for clinical trials

20 January 2026

University of Queensland researchers will develop improved health treatments to benefit Australians with more than $5.5 million from the Medical Research Future Fund.

The funding through the MRFF Clinical Trials Activity Grant – established to improve healthcare nationally – will support projects to improve kidney dialysis outcomes and guide safer use of IV fluids in children.

The 2024 MRFF Clinical Trials Activity Grant UQ recipients are:

Associate Professor Yeoungjee Cho – who is leading the STEP-PD trial which is testing whether starting peritoneal dialysis slowly and increasing it over time is a safer and more effective option than the usual full-dose approach for people with kidney failure.

Dr Sainath Raman – whose research is comparing two types of IV fluids, saline and buffered fluids, to find out which is safer for critically ill children in intensive care and improve outcomes.
