UQ melanoma expert named Australia’s most innovative researcher by NHMRC

7 April 2026

A University of Queensland researcher has been recognised for the transformative impact of their work to improve melanoma diagnosis at the NHMRC 2025 Research Awards for Excellence.

Professor H. Peter Soyer received the Marshall and Warren Ideas Grant Award which recognises the nation’s most innovative, potentially transformative, and highest-ranked recipient of an NHMRC Ideas Grant.

Professor Soyer was honoured for his pioneering work saving lives through earlier detection of melanoma, which is Australia’s third most common cancer.

Supported by an Ideas Grant, Professor Soyer is using deep image analysis and molecular profiling to track melanoma and ultimately accelerate diagnosis.

These awards rank applicants across NHMRC’s major funding schemes, recognising research at the forefront of their respective fields within health and medicine.
