21 August 1998

Parents, teachers, prospective students and members of the community are invited to attend a UQ Ipswich courses day in Ipswich city on Sunday, September 6.

Australia's 1998 University of the Year, the University of Queensland, is organising the courses day from 10am to 2pm at Ipswich Civic Hall, corner Limestone and Nicholas Street, Ipswich.

University Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Trevor Grigg said the session would enable many potential students from the Ipswich region to attend.

It would also update the Ipswich community on the campus, which opens for its first student intake in February, 1999.

"Many students about to finish Year 12 will have heard of our new campus and exciting range of courses through school liaison programs," he said.

"The UQ Ipswich courses day will provide a chance for people to receive individual attention to queries about the campus and its courses, and assist mature-aged students who may be returning to study after a break of some years."

Professor Grigg said the day would facilitate course selections before the September 30 Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre cutoff date for applications.

Representatives of University faculties, Courses and Admissions, and Student Support Services will staff displays in the Hall's Cunningham Room.

A series of 15-minute talks will be held in the 100-seat Lockyer Room on courses to be offered at UQ Ipswich. These include:

* bachelor of information environments - 11am
* bachelor of electronic commerce - 11.20am
* bachelor of business (communication) - 11.40am
* bachelor of contemporary studies - Noon
* bachelor of social science (applied communication and development studies) - 12.20pm
* bachelor of education (graduate entry) - 12.40pm
* bachelor of behavioural studies (not offered until the year 2000) - 1pm
* bachelor of business (leisure management) - 1.20pm

In the year 2000, courses previously offered through the Bremer TAFE and Gatton campuses in the bachelor of business (general, leisure management, property studies, tourism management, and travel management) will be transferred to the UQ Ipswich campus.

A number of new dual degree programs will also be available.
