The University of Queensland has appointed an international expert in innovation as head of a major University centre.
Professor Mark Dodgson has taken up the post of Director of the Technology and Innovation Management Centre.
He said he was looking forward to the Centre contributing to Queensland’s Smart State policy.
“The Technology and Innovation Management Centre is the largest in Australia. “The vision is to give it a prominent international role, particularly on the research fronts,” he said.
Professor Dodgson said he aimed to link the Centre with international research programs. He said research links had already been formed in the USA, UK, Canada and Finland.
The Centre conducts postgraduate teaching, research, and industry consultancy in technology management. The aim of the Centre is to improve business productivity and global competitiveness by integrating and promoting the management of technology and innovation in industry.
Professor Dodgson said Queensland was a major centre for innovation in Australia.
“I was interested in what Peter Beattie had to say about Queensland as the Smart State, particularly in terms of innovation and technology,” he said.
Professor Dodgson said he believed Queensland had an endless potential to develop innovative industries and associated new jobs and that the University played a central role in the state’s economic development.
Professor Dodgson was also the co-founder of the National Graduate School of Management at the Australian National University. He has worked as a Research Fellow at the Technical Change Centre in London and was Senior Fellow at the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex.
His research has also been recognised internationally. He has worked in over 30 countries and earlier this year was appointed Academic Visitor at the Said Business School at the University of Oxford. He has also acted as a consultant to a number of industrial companies based in many parts of the world, including the UK, Germany, Taiwan and South Africa.
In 1999 he became a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management. Professor Dodgson is also the Principal Investigator on a $1 million ARC Linkage grant examining Australia’s National Innovation System. With Professor David Gann at Imperial College, London and Dr Aamon Salter at the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex, he is working on a new book that looks at the Intensification of the Innovation Process.
Professor Dodgson has authored six books on innovation and is the Editor-in-Chief of Innovation Management, Policy and Practice.
