Scholars from four Brisbane-based universities will converge on The University of Queensland this month to speak at a free seminar on Islamic studies.
Hosted by UQ’s School of History, Philosophy, Religion and Classics (HPRC), the event will be held on Saturday, October 25 from 9am–1pm in rooms E-301, E-302, E-303 and E-212 of the Forgan Smith Building, St Lucia campus.
Event organiser Dr Roxanne Marcotte said 12 speakers from UQ, Queensland University of Technology, Griffith University and the University of New England’s Brisbane campus would discuss various topics related to Islamic studies.
Speakers include:
Professor Philip Almond, HPRC, Western imaginings of Islam;
Nicky Jones, UQ School of Law and School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies, Oppression and expression: the cases of Muslim women, the Islamic head scarf and religious discrimination in France;
Dr Ann Black, UQ School of Law, Islamisation of law and legal institutions: a case study on Brunei Darussalam;
Celia Genn, HPRC, The development of western Sufism;
Dr Renee Worringer, HPRC, The roots of Islamic panAsianism: Abdürresid Ibrahim`s early discussions of east and west in Al-Tilmidh;
Dr Nahid Kabir and Dr Clive Moore, HPRC, International terrorism and its impact on Muslims in Australia: 1991–2002; and
Dr Roxanne Marcotte, The new faces of tradition: al-Qaradawi on women.
