The University of Queensland is expanding its range of environmentally-friendly courses next year with two new degrees for people interested in careers in this field.
University Academic Registrar Neville Lamb said the bachelor of environmental management and the bachelor of environmental science degrees would be available over four years full-time study, or a longer period part-time.
The bachelor of environmental management will be offered at either the St Lucia or Gatton College campuses, depending on students' fields of interest.
Specialisations include natural systems and wildlife management, rural systems management, tropical forestry or sustainable development. The Year 12 subject prerequisite is English, but agricultural science, biology and/or geography are recommended.
The bachelor of environmental science, to be offered at St Lucia, allows students to enrol in one of three fields of specialisation - ecology, geochemistry or natural resource science. The course includes field trips to a range of areas of environmental interest in Queensland. Applicants need English, mathematics B and chemistry to undertake the course, and agricultural science, biological science and/or earth science are also recommended.
Mr Lamb said over the past 10 years there had been a radical change in industry, government and community attitudes to the environment.
"The environment, along with its management, is now a mainstream matter, vying with economic management, industry policy, health and education/science policy for public attention and informed decision-making," he said.
"These new degrees will complement other University of Queensland courses with environmental specialisations.
"For example, a person can undertake a bachelor of science and specialise in environmental science, or bachelor of engineering degree specialising in environmental engineering."
Mr Lamb said graduates of these courses were sought by consulting firms, industry, and state and Federal Govenment departments.
