Employers and students will come face-to-face at a Science and Engineering Careers Fair at the University of Queensland's Mayne Hall on Monday, August 3 from 12.15pm to 2.15pm.
Professional Links Project director Eril McNamara said the fair would showcase a range of career and postgraduate study opportunitites for science and engineering students.
The University's Faculties of Biological and Chemical Sciences, and Engineering, Physical Sciences and Architecture have a combined enrolment of 6500 students.
"Employers will have the chance to interact with students and academics to discuss student expectations and provide information about their organisations and the industries they represent," Ms McNamara said.
"Students will be able to meet employers, give them their CVs and learn about postgraduate opportunities."
Ms McNamara said 25 University departments and centres and more than 35 employers were registered to attend, including Queensland Health, CSIRO, Otek, DPI, BP Oil, Energex, Police (Forensic Science), Incitec, The Institution of Engineers, and McWilliam Consulting Engineers.
She said the Science and Engineering Web site:
http://www.ems.uq.edu.au/student-services/directory.htm
would be expanded to serve as a permanent database of employers and research opportunities. The free listing within the Employer Directory enabled employers to inform students and academics about their organisation and have hot links to their home pages.
Ms McNamara said in conjunction with the fair, the Professional Links Project was conducting work experience surveys to assist a current University Action Learning project. The surveys would ask graduates and employers about the value of work experience in their degrees and the workplace.
She said the project aimed to establish a system giving UQ students an advantage in the workplace, and enhancing their professional attributes.
The fair is sponsored by the two faculties plus the Office of Research and Postgraduate Studies and Student Support Services.
