University holds Sea Shore School

The University of Queensland's School of Marine Science will hold a free 'Sea Shore School' for the public at Wellington Point on Sunday March 23 from 1pm to 5pm.

The school, which is part of Sea Week activities, will be at the beach at the end of Main Road, Wellington Point.

Volunteer staff and students from the School of Marine Science will organise activities including talks on planktonic, nektonic (swimming fish) and benthic creatures (sea floor dwellers). There will be viewing aquaria, a touch tank, microscopic plankton sampling, and walks to the mangroves and along the mud flats.

Masters student in zoology Ida Fellegara said that previous Sea Shore Schools held by the School of Marine Science had proved very popular with people of all ages.

'People love the sea shore and this is a good opportunity to learn about littoral and estuarine species from School of Marine Science members,' she said.

'We suggest that people wishing to participate in the walking activities should wear closed shoes, such as boots, a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent.'

Undercover activities have been planned in the event of wet weather.
