UQ mathematician wins scholarly publishing award

Associate-Professor Geoff McLachlan of the Mathematics Department has been honoured with the inaugural Wiley-Interscience Award for outstanding achievement in scholarly publishing.

He received the 1997 award forThe EM Algorithm and extensions , for which he was senior co-author with Professor Thriyambakam Krishnan of the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta.

Wiley-Interscience is one of the world's biggest publishers of scientific texts and monographs.

'The book is already being used widely in graduate schools in the US, including such places as Harvard and the University of Chicago,' Dr McLachlan said.

Editor of the Wiley-Interscience Mathematics & Statistics Division Steve Quigley presented the award at the annual conference of the American and Statistical Association held in Los Angeles.

In making the presentation to Dr McLachlan, Mr Quigley said: 'Your recent book, The EM Algorithm and extensions, has received global acclaim and extraordinarily high appeal in such a short period of time.'
