SunShark running second

19 January 1999

The University of Queensland solar car, SunShark, is in overall second place in the CitiPower SunRace from Sydney to Melbourne after coming fourth in the 273km third leg from Wagga Wagga to Hay in southern inland New South Wales today (Tuesday, January 19).

SunShark was in second place after the Sydney-Canberra leg on Sunday and became leader after yesterday's section between Canberra and Wagga Wagga.
Cloudy conditions and a strong headwind caused SunShark to slow to 2km/h this afternoon as its batteries ran low.

SunShark racing manager Bernie Walsh said that the light became so dim the team had to trailer the car the last 25km into Hay.

"We were getting less than 15 percent of normal light and we were driving into a 30km/h headwind," he said.

The fourth leg of the SunRace tomorrow (Wednesday January 20) will be from Hay to Mildura. The race will finish in Albert Park in Melbourne on January 23.
