UQ senior appointments position University for the future

The University of Queensland's governing Senate last night approved a re-organisation of Vice-Chancellor Professor John Hay's executive group to position the University for the new millennium.

The changes continue a small senior executive comprising two Deputy Vice-Chancellors and one Pro-Vice-Chancellor with distinct responsibilities, reporting to the Vice-Chancellor.

They follow a decision by Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Ted Brown not to accept Senate's invitation of February 18 to extend his appointment until December, 2002.

Chancellor Sir Llew Edwards said Senate had noted with regret Professor Brown's decision not to continue beyond December 2000 and expressed its gratitude and admiration for his outstanding contributions to the University.

"We're very sorry that Ted is not going to stay longer", Sir Llew said. "The Vice-Chancellor values his wise counsel and friendship.

"However, we are pleased he has accepted Professor Hay's invitation to continue to represent him, and the community, on a range of University-related and other roles following his retirement from the University."

Professor Brown's present portfolio of responsibilities will be reallocated next year to a small executive team - Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Paul Greenfield, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International and Development) Professor Trevor Grigg and to a new Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) who will be appointed following international advertisement and search.

Sir Llew said the new appointments would further strengthen the executive team and were very important to the future directions of the University.

Professor Greenfield's title will be re-designated Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Senate has approved his appointment for an initial term of five years from January next year. Professor Greenfield will retain primary responsibility for the advancement of research at the University, but will relinquish his role as Head of the Graduate School. He will replace Professor Brown as Chair of the Committee of Executive Deans.

Professor Grigg will continue his recently-established role to advance the institution's growth at home and abroad. He will also take over matters relating to capital management and space allocation.

The new Pro-Vice-Chancellor's responsibilities will include enhancement of teaching and learning outcomes, the new information and communications technologies and a wide range of academic staffing matters.
