Olympic torch comes to UQ

The Olympic Torch Relay is passing through The University of Queensland's St Lucia campus today at about 4.15 pm.

The relay will approach the University from Indooroopilly Shoppingtown via Hawken Drive, turning right into Upland Road and entering Sir William MacGregor Drive near Kings College.

It will proceed along Sir William MacGregor Drive to Mill Road and Sir Fred Schonell Drive before departing the campus for Coronation Drive and the City Botanic Gardens.

University Secretary and Registrar, Mr Douglas Porter, said to minimise disruption, the University had cancelled examinations scheduled for this afternoon.

Staff and students are advised to plan to avoid potential severe traffic problems this afternoon on the campus and in the surrounding suburbs.

Mr Porter said staff and students should be aware that surrounding roadways and suburbs in St Lucia will have severe traffic restrictions from about 3pm and that entry and exit to campus would be difficult until shortly after about 5pm.

Public transport will operate normally during the day, but there may be some major vehicle delays to the city, as Coronation Drive will be blocked off in peak hour for the Olympic torch relay.
