UQ previews its student portal

The University of Queensland has launched a preview of its innovative web-based portal at http://www.uq.edu.au/myuq

my.UQ - as the system to be released later this year is known - will allow personalised one-stop access to services, study, information and advice, effectively giving students their "own place" in University cyberspace.

Pilot student pages are expected to be online by October, giving students a chance to provide feedback before the site is finalised. A completed and fully-functional site will be available by early 2001, with a staff version to follow.

The final stage will complete delivery of one of the most advanced applications of portal technology in Australian higher education.

Vice-Chancellor Professor John Hay says my.UQ is an exciting development for the University community.

"This imaginative web development is a very strategic step for the University. Information systems are becoming increasingly important to how we work, study and go forward in the global environment," he said.

Director of UQ's Office of Marketing and Communications Meredith Jackson said my.UQ will also play an important role in communicating change to students and staff.

"For example, it will provide a means for telling students about changes that affect them, such as our new student administration systems and improvements to how we award credit for degree programs," Ms Jackson said.

These improvements to degree programs - known as Course Standardisation are also explained on a new website at http://www.uq.edu.au/coursestandardisation
