UQ graduate heads to Oxford University on Fairfax scholarship

Studying at Oxford University with his identical twin brother is a dream come true for a University of Queensland graduate.

Twenty-six year old Daniel Piggott recently won one of three prestigious 2002 James Fairfax/Oxford Australia Scholarships for Australian citizens.

“My brother Adam is completing a PhD in mathematics at Oxford University and it’s been a dream of mine to join him,” Mr Piggott said.

The 1999 University Medallist holds a Bachelor of Arts/Law (first class honours) from UQ and plans to complete a Bachelor of Civil Law via Oxford University’s intensive one-year masters by coursework program.

The scholarships provide a living allowance of $A12,000, college fees and some university fees. The University of Queensland has provided a further $A10,000.

Mr Piggott, who is currently a solicitor for law firm Mallesons Stephen Jaques in their Technology, Communications and Intellectual Property Division, plans to leave the country with his wife Genevieve on Thursday, September 19.

They will live at Oxford’s Magdalen College.

Mr Piggott said he and his wife would work in the United Kingdom following the completion of his studies, but would eventually return to Australia.

The scholarships, funded by Australians who have studied at Oxford University, and in particular, media proprietor James Fairfax, were open to people under the age of 30 who held a bachelor degree with first or upper second class honours and who planned to study for a second undergraduate or postgraduate degree in any discipline.
