Graduate options on offer at UQ Information Expo

13 September 2002

University of Queensland postgraduate programs and the UQ lifestyle will come under the spotlight at a Postgraduate Information Expo on Wednesday, September 25 at the University`s St Lucia campus.

The Expo, dedicated to UQ research and coursework programs, will be at the UQ Centre from 3pm to 6pm.

Director of UQ`s Graduate School and Dean of Postgraduate Students Professor Alan Lawson said postgraduate studies were an increasingly significant part of UQ`s offerings.

"UQ offers a full range of options from Graduate Certificates to the Doctor of Philosophy, from Coursework Masters to Professional Doctorates," he said.

"Reports from the Graduate Careers Council of Australia consistently show that postgraduate students have better employment and salary outcomes than bachelor degree students.”

Professor Lawson said postgraduate information would be available from the Graduate School, all UQ Faculties, and most of the individual schools at the September 25 event.

Graduate School staff would be available to answer questions about research scholarships, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) enrolments, and general queries about postgraduate study at UQ. Faculty and school booths would have staff to provide information about coursework postgraduate programs, specific UQ research strengths, and possibilities for project supervision.

Professor Lawson said the Postgraduate Information Expo would also feature information about an array of specialty services for UQ postgraduate students.

These UQ sections could assist postgraduate students undertaking research and project work and give students the optimum higher degree experience. These sections include:

Student Support Services which offer, among other sessions, thesis writing, time management, and project planning sessions.
UQ Library provides a comprehensive range of services to assist those undertaking postgraduate study; from computer training for research and internet resources to using specific databases and obtaining reading lists for particular study areas.
• < a href="http://www.uqsport.uq.edu.au/">UQ Sport helps all students maintain and build on their physical activities, providing consultants for individualised exercise programs, excellent facilities and organisation of team-sports.
• The PELS office, which provides advice and information about the payment of postgraduate fees through the new Postgraduate Education Loans Scheme (PELS).

Professor Lawson said the Postgraduate Information Expo was an initiative of UQ`s Graduate School and was strongly supported by the Office of the Dean of Students.
