IT school’s in for Year 11 students

30 September 2002

A challenging and exciting experience is guaranteed for 60 high school students attending the Queensland University Information Technology School (QUITS) from Tuesday, October 1–Thursday, October 3.

Held at the UQ St Lucia campus and run by The University’s of Queensland’s School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE), the Australian Computer Society sponsored event is entering its seventh year.

It aims to expose Year 11 students to aspects of Information Technology to help them decide if they want to pursue an IT career.

The technical program is based around exercises created especially for QUITS by the academic and research staff of ITEE.

It includes programming, hardware and Internet sessions. Students learn to program in a challenging and exciting programming environment, working on puzzles, simulations, and graphical interfaces.

They program a computer to control the movements of a model vehicle, experience a novel programming language, and create company advertising web pages.

One of the highlights of QUITS is a luncheon being held at St Leo’s College on Thursday, October 3, with ITEE staff, industry sponsors and special guest, Queensland Minister for Innovation and Technology, Paul Lucas.

Media: Mr Lucas will be available to be photographed with students at 1pm on Thursday, October 3.
