UQ mid-year Orientation Program

17 July 2003

Tips on finding accommodation, financial survival and avoiding plagiarism are some of the useful information sessions on offer to new and continuing students during UQ’s mid- year Orientation Week.

The Orientation program runs from July 21-27 and information sessions will take place at the University’s St Lucia, Ipswich, Gatton and COTAH campuses.

Student Centre Manager Eril McNamara said the comprehensive program will give students the opportunity to find out more about study programs as well as the University’s academic and personal support services.

“About 2,500 students will be joining UQ in July and traditionally there are more new international than domestic students at this time,” she said.

“We’re therefore running a number of preliminary information sessions so that as soon as students new to Brisbane arrive, they can start to settle in.”

UQ’s Getting Started session will give all new international students essential information on banking, public transport, shopping, enrolment procedures, University facilities and Australian culture.

A session on accommodation includes information on legal rights, leases and tenancy responsibilities, while Financial Survival Strategies gives tips on finding part-time work, and student discounts.

A free printed program guide, colour-coded by Faculty, has been produced to help students find both compulsory academic and optional information sessions. The information is also available online at www.uq.edu.au/orientation/.

Ms McNamara said essential sessions covering course information, academic advising, information technology training and campus tours will be available at all four campuses.

“Other information sessions which proved successful at the beginning of the year, such as Avoid Plagiarism and Transferring Programs, will also be repeated mid-year for both new and continuing students,” she said.

Favourite Orientation social activities such as Market Day, UQ SPORT demonstrations and a ReVitalize band concert will take place during ReUnion Week , July 28 – August 1, first week of semester.
