Volunteers needed for UQ alcohol study

People thinking about reducing their alcohol consumption are needed for a University of Queensland trial to study correspondence-based management of the problem.

Researchers in UQ's School of Medicine are seeking people who feel they are drinking at levels harmful to their health for the trial.

The research is being undertaken at the Royal Brisbane Hospital under the supervision of UQ's Professor David Kavanagh.

Research has already found that many people are able to reduce their alcohol consumption by up to 50 percent in the privacy of their own homes through mail and phone contact with a therapist.

Participants must be thinking about reducing their alcohol consumption and be willing to complete several questionnaires during the three-month program.

Following the program, they will be also sent follow-up questionnaires every three months for a year.

Information will be strictly confidential and all participants will be required to consult a General Practitioner before starting the program to ascertain if the program is suitable.

People interested in participating should contact Ms Jacobson on 1300 300 164 or email ajacobson@somc.uq.edu.au.
