Students take up University study mid-year
New and continuing students can find out more about study programs and academic and personal support services during The University of Queensland`s Mid-year Orientation Week.
The Orientation program will run from Monday, July 18 to Friday, July 22 and will include information sessions at all three UQ campuses: St Lucia, Ipswich and Gatton.
Student Centre Manager Kate Heffernan said the comprehensive program would offer advice on finding accommodation, financial survival strategies and would include a range of social events.
“Many of our new students will be international students while some will have transferred from other universities,” she said.
“We are therefore running a number of preliminary information sessions so that as soon as students new to Brisbane arrive, they can start to settle in.”
UQ`s Getting Started session will give all new international students essential information on banking, public transport, shopping, enrolment procedures, University facilities and Australian culture.
Accommodation sessions will include information on legal rights, leases and tenancy responsibilities. Essential sessions covering course information, academic advising, information technology training and campus tours will also be available at all three campuses.
“The program is designed to give students time to adapt to university life while they learn about the facilities and services on offer and get to know other students,” Ms Heffernan said.
A free printed program guide can be obtained from a campus Student Centre or downloaded from www.uq.edu.au/orientation
Ms Heffernan said the state-of-the-art St Lucia Student Centre, which was refurbished earlier this year, will provide a one-stop-shop for student services.
New student lounges, eight service counters, 14 self-serve counters, cashiering facilities and three meeting rooms have been built in the 660-square-metre Centre.
The regular Orientation social activities such as the ReUnion Market Day at St Lucia and the UQ SPORT Expo will take place the following week on Wednesday, July 27.
