Financial literacy course back by popular demand

21 September 2005

UQ Business School is again supporting the Financial Literacy program by running a second course of workshops at its city premises from September 28.

Covering everything from household cash flow to understanding risk and demystifying financial services, the sessions run for an hour and a half and are structured to allow ample time for questions and discussion.

Greg Osborne, a participant from the first course run earlier this year, said the most valuable thing about the course was the fact that it was unbiased.

“The presenter was clearly an experienced and astute investor but he was able to communicate his knowledge without talking over the top of people,” he said.

Another participant, Monique Suckling, said she had been trying to stop using her credit card as a result of the course.

“I’ve really tried to avoid using my card – so much so that I got a letter from the company wondering why,” she said.

Ms Suckling also said she was really impressed with presenter Ron Skelly.

“He doesn’t have to be out there doing this stuff – he really believes in it. He’s alerted me to the financial pitfalls and there’s a lot of pitfalls out there.”

UQ Business School Head Professor Tim Brailsford said he was pleased to support such a worthwhile initiative.

“The program is a small but significant step in helping people from all walks of life to gain control over their financial situation,” he said.

The course of 10 workshops begins on Wednesday, September 28 and continues for 10 weeks with one session starting at 4pm and another at 6pm at UQ Business School Downtown, level 19, Central Plaza One, 345 Queen Street. For more information phone 3346 7111 or e-mail finlit@business.uq.edu.au.
