Celebration of Spanish and Latin American culture at University of Queensland

20 October 2005

The poetry and music of Spanish and Latin American women will be celebrated in a free event open to the public at The University of Queensland tomorrow. (Friday, October 21)

Voces de Mujeres en la Poesia Hispanoamericana, or poetry readings and songs in Spanish of women poets from Spain and Latin America, will be held at the Abel Smith Theatre, St Lucia, starting at 5.30pm.

It will be the second time the event, organized by the Spanish program in UQ`s School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies, has been held.

Academic staff and postgraduate students from the Spanish program will perform and read music and poetry from talented women from Latin America and Spain.

Included will be songs by women composers such as Chabuca Granda and Violeta Parra, and readings of Chilean Nobel Prize Gabriela Mistral and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz from Mexico.
