Acclaimed harpist gives participants a special sound
Acclaimed harpist and vocalist Mary Doumany will open the eyes of international and Australian students to different musical ideas during day three of the Australian Scholar-Athlete Games at The University of Queensland tomorrow (January 25).
Considered to be one of the most original composers and voices in the Australian musical community, Ms Doumany is facilitating the artistic and musical elements of a workshop for participants tomorrow between 9am and 10.30am.
Ms Doumany said she will enjoy pushing the boundaries of her music making during the Australian Scholar-Athlete Games.
“I am looking forward to working with students from very diverse backgrounds to come up with some original sounds and compilations during the games,” Ms Doumany said.
The musical workshop is part of a week long program for Scholar-Athlete Games participants, which will include workshops for participants on drama, dance and sporting activities as well as keynote addresses on ethics, fair play and the Olympic movement; peace and cultural diversity; and the environment.
The Australian Scholar Athlete Games (January 23-29) brings together almost 100 students from across the Asia Pacific region to participate in a program of sport, culture and education.
The Games are a first for the southern hemisphere and aim to promote understanding, acceptance and friendship among the youth of the world and cultivate Asia Pacific’s future world leaders.
The program is being delivered in partnership between the Queensland Government, The University of Queensland and the Institute for International Sport with a view to Queensland hosting the World Scholar-Athlete Games in 2008.
