UQ plans new-look arts degree

10 March 2006

The University of Queensland is revising its Bachelor of Arts degree in time for 2007 enrolments.

“The University is responding to changing student and employer demand and to the emergence of new fields of knowledge,” the Executive Dean of UQ’s Arts Faculty, Professor Richard Fotheringham said.

“The Arts degree is one of our flagship programs and we will continue to re-examine our offerings in line with global trends to provide the most relevant courses.

“Students in the 21st century want different things to 20 years ago.

“They want a more focused program that will give them real skills quickly.”

Professor Fotheringham said all fields of study in the degree would be retained apart from a small number which attracted almost no students.

Existing students would have the option of continuing under the present rules, or changing to the new structure.

Professor Fotheringham said the Faculty would continue its policy to attract and retain the highest quality staff.

“This is about offering a better degree, not cutting it down,” Professor Fotheringham said.

The proposed new offering would be submitted to the University’s Academic Board for approval.
