UQ seminar analyses Hollywood’s pre-eminence

2 May 2006

A free public seminar at The University of Queensland on Tuesday, May 9 will discuss why Hollywood is so successful and powerful around the globe.

Professor Toby Miller will examine why Hollywood overwhelms most other national cinemas and virtually extinguishes foreign cinema in the multicultural United States.

Professor Miller is Professor of English, Sociology, and Women’s Studies and Director of the Program in Film & Visual Culture at the University of California, Riverside.

The UQ Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies seminar, entitled Global Hollywood, will be held on May 9 at 2pm at the Social Sciences and Humanities Library Conference Room, Level 1, Duhig Building at the UQ St Lucia campus.

This presentation draws on Professor Miller`s influential book Global Hollywood (now in its second edition).
Professor Miller will discuss the political economy, cultural studies, and cultural policy analyses that highlight the material factors underlining Hollywood’s apparent artistic success.

The seminar will also outline the theory of the New International Division of Cultural Labor.

Members of the university community and the general public are invited to attend this free seminar with refreshments to follow.
