Summer Semester puts degrees in the fast lane
Students wanting to fast-track their degrees or professionals looking to broaden their skills can take advantage of the variety of courses on offer this Summer Semester.
The University of Queensland’s Summer Semester, which runs from 26 November 2007 to 9 February 2008, is open for enrolments now. More than 240 courses are available across all faculties and campuses.
UQ Academic Registrar Linda Bird said Summer Semester offered a range of options to many groups of people.
“Students from UQ and other universities can accelerate or diversify their studies, professionals can update or advance their knowledge, other individuals who are not currently enrolled elsewhere can take the opportunity for personal development, interest or pleasure,” Ms Bird said.
“High school students can similarly experience university first hand, use their holidays to undertake courses for future credit towards award programs or undertake courses for the purpose of meeting pre-requisites and meet people with similar interests.”
While these high school students will still have to apply to QTAC to gain entry to their chosen programs for the beginning of the academic year, the Summer Semester courses give them a chance to get a leg-up or a headstart in their undergraduate study and simultaneously have their first taste of uni life.
Both undergraduate and postgraduate courses will be available over Summer Semester and all undergraduate courses will be HECS-HELP eligible, meaning undergraduate students in a Commonwealth Supported place have the option of not paying fees upfront.
Summer Semester courses are intensive versions of selected UQ courses, most of which would normally take at least one standard semester to complete.
Current UQ students can enrol using mySI-net. Other prospective students, such as students from other universities, professionals undertaking further studies, people seeking tertiary study for personal development, interest or pleasure and high school students, can apply directly to the University.
Students can also study courses over Summer Semester to satisfy specific requirements for admission purposes.
Anyone can apply for Summer Semester as long as they meet the prerequisites for the course.
