Fire in building under construction

22 February 2008

Fire appliances are in attendance at a fire which broke out about 11.30am at the six-storey, $52 million, V-shaped General Purpose North 4 (GPN4) Building at Campbell Place, University of Queensland, St Lucia today.

A number of fire appliances and the Queensland Police are in attendance.

UQ Secretary and Registrar Douglas Porter said the building was due for completion in March 2008. It will house the Institute for Continuing and TESOL Education.

About 150-200 workers on the building have been evacuated and all accounted for. As a precaution, staff and students from the adjoining Social Sciences and Humanities Library have been safely evacuated to the Student Union plaza area.

Campbell Place and University Drive are temporarily closed and members of the public are asked to avoid these areas.
