UQconnect takes to the water

In a world-first, UQconnect, UQ’s own not-for-profit Internet Service Provider, is bringing wireless Internet to the Brisbane City Council’s CityCats.

All CityCat passengers with wireless-enabled laptops will be able to access the Brisbane City Council and Translink websites for free.

Students and staff from most Australian universities will be able to access the wider Internet by connecting back to their home university.

UQ Information Technology Services (ITS) director Nick Tate said the new service was great news for CityCat passengers.

“UQconnect is pleased to be able to offer this world-first service to students, staff and other passengers,

“A wireless network on the CityCat means passengers can truly be connected everywhere, from home to uni, he said.

“The network give students and staff the opportunity to use their travel time to work and study,” he said.

The UQconnect services will debut on the newest CityCat, which is being unveiled on November 13 by Lord Mayor Campbell Newman.
