Sticky Fingers by Karishma Patel, one of last year's winning entries

Following last year’s success, UQ’s School of Political Science and International Studies is delighted to launch the 2010 International Photography Competition.

Entrants are encouraged to “look closer” at the world, and also to reflect on the role visual images play in shaping knowledge and understanding.

“The reality of our lives today is that the way we look at and fathom the world we live in is increasingly mediated by pictures, films and video,” said Dr Sebastian Kaempf, one of the judges on last year’s panel.

The competition provides a platform for UQ students and alumni to showcase their interest in politics and global issues.

Last year’s judging panel faced a difficult task but eventually settled on two winning shots - ‘Sticky Fingers’ taken by undergraduate Karishma Patel and ‘Ulaanbaatar Graduation’ taken by alumnus Dan Miller.

Ms Patel said she was delighted the judges had been as struck as she was by the image of the two girls from Bardia in Nepal, unable to escape the reach of modern day life.

"I was bewildered there were no taps of running water yet non-biodegradable wrappers of (Haldiram) snacks littered the ground,” she said.

Entries close on August 31, 2010

All of last year’s shortlisted entries are on display in the School of Political Science and International Studies.
