UQ law academic appointed to international banking and finance council

29 June 2010

University of Queensland TC Beirne School of Law Director of Postgraduate Studies Dr Alan Davidson has been invited to become a foundation member of the Council of International Standby Practices (CISP).

Dr Davidson will be the sole Australian member and was invited to join the Council because of his “expertise in this field and long-standing association with the Institute”. His appointment will begin on July 1, 2010.

Although formally based in Washington DC, the Council will meet regularly by teleconference. Dr Davidson will also serve on panels to draft interpretations, assist with opinions and provide discrete advice from time to time.

The Council is responsible for overseeing and interpreting the International Standby Practices (ISP98), a body of self regulating rules dealing with more than $400 billion standby letters of credit and independent undertakings in international trade and commerce each year.

The Council’s duties also include assuring the ISP98 remain aligned with international standby practice and law, recommending when and whether revision is appropriate, advising on the revision of The Official Commentary on ISP98, and advising regarding intervention in litigation as an Amicus Curiae (Friend of Court). The Council is also responsible for overseeing the Institute’s Standby & Guarantee Certification Program.

In addition to his new appointment, Dr Davidson is also a Fellow of the Institute of International Banking Law and Practice and has acted as an international delegate, representing Australia’s International Chamber of Commerce interests.

Dr Davidson has a PhD in Letters of Credit and teaches Banking Law and International Trade Finance Law at UQ’s School of Law.
