The Great Court race returns to The University of Queensland's St Lucia campus this month.

Now in its 28th year, the Great Court Race has become one of The University of Queensland’s proudest traditions.

The 636 metre lap of the Great Court was first run in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the University, and is based on the historic Cambridge University Race, as depicted in the film, Chariots of Fire.

Aside from the prestigious Great Court Race, the event program also includes an inter-college relay and a 70m sprint race, which uses a handicap system similar to that of the famous Stawell Gift.

The main race is open to all UQ undergraduate students, while all UQ students (including postgraduate) and staff are welcome to enter the sprint event.

All participants in the inter-college relay must be UQ students and residents of the college they are competing for.

The heats for the event will be held on Wednesday 23 May, 2012 from 1pm – 2pm at the Great Court, St Lucia.

The finals will take place the following week on Wednesday 30 May, 2012.

Registrations are open now at http://www.uqsport.com.au/greatcourt.
