Robots compete for championship title at UQ

This weekend, The University of Queensland will welcome hundreds of talented school students and their robots as they compete in the annual RoboCup Junior Queensland Championship.

As part of the Championship, robots will be put through their paces across competitions of varying levels of complexity including dance, rescue, and soccer.

UQ’s Head of the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, Professor Paul Strooper said RoboCup Junior was a great educational initiative.

“The annual RoboCup Championship provides the perfect environment for students to learn about robotics in a fun and educational setting,” he said.

Over Saturday and Sunday, 143 teams of primary and secondary school students will compete in the 2012 RoboCup Junior Championships.

Winners of the Queensland competition will be invited to attend the 2012 Australian Open Championships held in Canberra on September 22 and 23.

Chair of the RoboCup Junior Queensland Committee, Alexander Bush, said the event was always well attended, with 413 students registered to compete this weekend.

“RoboCup Junior is a project-oriented educational initiative which sponsors local, regional and international robotic events for schools students,” he said.

“This event is open to the public and I encourage all those interested to come down to the UQ Centre this weekend.”
