UQ workshop to address national science curriculum

Secondary school science teachers have an opportunity to participate in a practical course to assist in the teaching of Science as a Human Endeavour, a component of the new national curriculum.

Using a series of experimental and analytical activities, the workshops, being held at The University of Queensland, will assist teachers to develop or refresh their laboratory skills and identify new opportunities for Extended Experimental Investigations (EEI) in the classroom.

The course has been designed and will be facilitated by experienced experimental scientists Dr Jack Wang, Dr Susan Rowland, and Dr Gwen Lawrie from UQ’s School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences.

The workshops are aimed at helping teachers develop laboratory competencies directly applicable to a wide range of biology and chemistry experiments in the high school classroom, and will look at opportunities to extend EEI topics that teachers are currently using.

Group discussions will be facilitated and teachers will receive workshop resources such as manuals, templates and other support material to develop their own ideas for EEIs.
