The University of Queensland has welcomed a world-renowned microeconometrician from Indiana University, who is an academic leader in the field of econometrics.

Professor Pravin Trivedi joined the School of Economics, today as Professor.

He is a world academic leader in the field of econometrics – the application of mathematics, statistical methods and, more recently, computer science, to economic data and described as the branch of economics that aims to give empirical content to economic relations.

Previously a distinguished Professor Emeritus and J. H. Rudy Professor Emeritus in the Department of Economics at Indiana University, Professor Trivedi will work six months out of each year for the School.

Head of the UQ School of Economics, Professor Flavio Menezes said Professor Trivedi would be an outstanding addition to the School.

“I am very pleased that the School of Economics has been able to attract great talent in the area of microeconometrics,” Professor Menezes said.

“Professor Trivedi will join a group of very talented economists across a range of areas.”

As a former consultant, fellow and research committee member for the World Bank, Professor Trivedi has participated on the editorial boards of many scholarly journals, including the Journal of Applied Econometrics, Foundations and Trends in Econometrics, the Econometrics Journal and the Review of Economic Studies.

He earned his degrees from the London School of Economics and the University of London, and has held previous academic appointments at the University College London, The University of Southampton and the Australian National University.

His current research and teaching interests are in microeconometric methods and applications.

He concentrates his applied research on health economics and analyses and econometrically models the role of incentives and selection in healthcare insurance and utilisation.

Apart from receiving many awards and honours, Professor Trivedi has been recognised as a Distinguished Author by the Journal of Applied Economics, a master lecturer at the Marie Curie Training Programme in Applied Health Economics in Greece, awarded the Jean Monnet Research Fellowship at the European Research Institute in Florence, and made a fellow of the Journal of Econometrics.

Professor Trivedi is also an author of numerous influential papers in microeconometrics, and his books: Regression Analysis of Count Data and Microeconometrics: Methods and Applications are well-known to graduate students globally.
