Sixth consecutive UQ alumnus appointed Governor of Queensland

The University of Queensland has congratulated Chief Justice Paul de Jersey AC following the announcement he will be the 26^th Governor of Queensland - the sixth consecutive UQ graduate to be appointed to the position.

UQ Chancellor Mr John Story and Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj said they looked forward to working with the Chief Justice to continue promoting Queensland’s interests.

“UQ is very proud to be associated with Chief Justice de Jersey, whose distinguished service in his professional and voluntary roles has long been an inspiration to UQ students and graduates,” Professor Høj said.

Chief Justice de Jersey will follow a series of UQ graduates in the role: Ms Penelope Wensley AC (2008 – 2014), Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO (2003 – 2008), Major General Peter Arnison AC VCO (1997 – 2003), Ms Leneen Forde AC (1992 – 1997) and Sir Walter Campbell AC QC (1985 – 1992).

Mr Story and Professor Høj paid tribute to Ms Wensley.

“Her Excellency has been an indefatigable Governor with a remarkable commitment to the role,” Mr Story said.

“In partnership with her husband, Stuart McCosker, she has been selfless in her contributions to the state.”

Appointed the Queensland Chief Justice in 1998, Chief Justice de Jersey was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from UQ in 2000, having previously completed a Bachelor of Arts in 1969 and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) in 1972.

He is a life member of the Bar Association of Queensland and was chairman of the state’s Law Reform Commission between 1996 and 1998.

The Patron of the UQ Pro Bono Centre and a supporter of UQ’s TC Beirne School of Law, he will be a guest speaker at a Pro Bono Centre event on 26 March.

Head of school and Dean of Law Professor Sarah Derrington congratulated the Chief Justice on his appointment.

"I'm delighted that another distinguished alumnus has been recognised for his exceptional service to the community and the legal profession by this appointment,” she said.

“I offer my warmest congratulations to His Honour on behalf of all the students, alumni and staff of the Law School."

Premier Campbell Newman said Chief Justice de Jersey would take office when Ms Wensley’s term ended on 29 July 2014.
