Global economist to speak on Australian economy

Leading economist and Harvard Professor Dale W. Jorgenson will discuss Australia’s position in the world economy at a public lecture on 8 July.

Academics, students and government and business representatives are invited to the 24^th Colin Clark Memorial Lecture, hosted by The University of Queensland School of Economics, at Customs House in Brisbane from 12 to 2.30pm.

UQ School of Economics Head Professor Flavio Menezes said the lecture was a great opportunity to engage with a respected economist.

“The UQ School of Economics is proud to be at the forefront of issues affecting Australian and worldwide economies,” Professor Menezes said.

“We are delighted to be hosting an academic of such a high calibre, who can provide attendees with a unique perspective on economic issues.

“Professor Jorgenson is the Samuel W. Morris University Professor at Harvard University and is a former President of the American Economic Association.

“His presentation, titled ‘Australia and the growth of the world economy’, will discuss the reconfiguration of the global economic order and the rise of emerging Asian economies.

“It will address three major trends in the world economy –  China overtaking the US; China and India’s impact on the acceleration of world economic growth; and the emergence of a new world order in 2020.”

Past Colin Clark Memorial Lecture speakers include economists Professor Ross Garnaut, Dr David Gruen and Professor Ian Harper. The public lecture has been held annually since 1991 in honour of Dr Colin Clark, a UQ Economics academic who had a pioneering role in the construction of national accounts.
