Free movies at UQ showcase Chinese culture

Contemporary Chinese culture will be on display at two free movie screenings to be held at the Schonell Theatre next week.

Presented by the Confucius Institute at The University of Queensland, the two recent-release movies afford a rare opportunity for Brisbane cinema-goers to enjoy contemporary Chinese-produced action and comedy on the large screen, at no cost.

UQ Confucius Institute Director Professor Ping Chen said he was delighted to invite the general public to exclusive screenings of two contemporary Chinese films.

“Brotherhood of Blades and 20 Once Again are sure to entertain cinema-goers,” he said.

“Released in China late last year, both movies showcase China’s diverse movie-making talent.”

绣春刀 Brotherhood of Blades (MA15+) is an action movie focusing on three sworn brothers tasked with annihilating a corrupt fugitive and his gang, who subsequently become pawns in a deadly game filled with secrets, conspiracies and lethal consequences.

重返20岁 20 Once Again (PG) is a light-hearted comedy featuring a ‘cranky’ 70-year-old who suddenly finds herself in the body of a 20-year-old.

The movies will be screened on Friday, 18 and Saturday, 19 September at UQ’s St Lucia campus. Scheduled screenings are listed here. 

To introduce the Chinese film showcase, renowned Hong Kong film critic and Head Programmer for the Brisbane Asia Pacific Film Festival Ms Kiki Fung will be presenting The Poetics of Chinese Cinema (Venue: Sir Liew Edwards Building, Level 6 Terrace Room) at 5pm on Friday, 18 September, a UQ Confucius Institute Public Lecture on Chinese Culture Series. 

The lecture is freely available to the public.  Light refreshment will be provided after the lecture.
