UQ’s global ranking on the rise

The University of Queensland has climbed five places in a prestigious global ranking that places it 60^th globally and confirming that its placing at 46, 47, 56 and 77 in other rankings of the world’s more than 10,000 universities is real and a clear reason international students aim to graduate with a UQ degree.

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2015-16 was released today (1 October). Watch the launch of the results live from 9.30am here.

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj said previous federal cuts to higher education had put great strain on universities throughout Australia, but results such as this were testament to a continuing commitment to delivering exceptional teaching and research outcomes.

“When Australian universities hold our own in prestigious rankings such as these, we can be reassured that we are maintaining pace against intensifying international competition, which is important for Australia’s future,” Professor Høj said.

“These rankings are also a tremendous recommendation for our 225,000-plus alumni, proving to current and future employers that UQ graduates have credentials from a university that is building and maintaining its prestigious top-100 global standing.

“Our graduates are highly sought-after internationally, and rankings like this verify our position as an institute that fosters resilient, worldly critical-thinkers who have been exposed to state-of-the-art resources and academic practices in the course of their education.”

Editor of THE World University Rankings Phil Baty said the rankings drew on data from 1126 institutions.

“The rankings, now in their 12th year, apply rigorous standards, using tough global benchmarks across all of a global research university’s key missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook,” he said.

“The results are trusted by students and their families, academics, university leaders and governments.

“For UQ to make 60 in the world is an outstanding achievement to be celebrated.”
