World Health Day: Beat Diabetes

Today is World Health Day: Beat Diabetes.

UQ experts are available for comment on diabetes-related topics, including drug development, physical activity, diet and body mass, and autoimmune diabetes.

Dr Abishek Iyer - drug development

Dr Iyer is developing new experimental drugs to activate the proteins involved in secreting insulin. The aim to develop oral versions of these drugs, which are cheaper, easier to take and require less supervision than current injectable medicines.

Associate Professor Ray Steptoe - autoimmune diabetes

Associate Professor Steptoe is working to understand the immune control mechanisms that normally prevent the development of type 1 diabetes and methods to prevent or limit the destructive immune response that leads to type 1 diabetes.

Dr Lennert Veerman - physical activity and diet

Dr Veerman's research interests are on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of prevention in the area of physical activity, diet and body mass. He has published on a broad range of topics including obesity and other risk factors for chronic disease, philosophy of science, mathematical modelling, genetic screening and the epidemiology of depression.
