A newly appointed Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General will discuss mass atrocity prevention and human rights protection when he visits The University of Queensland next week.

Ivan Šimonović is the former Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights and head of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in New York.

His new role is to further the political, institutional and operational development of the Responsibility to Protect principle, as set out by the United Nations General Assembly.

Mr Šimonović will discuss Mass Atrocity and Human Rights Protection at a public seminar at UQ on Monday, October 24 from 4.45pm to 6.30pm.

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Executive Dean Professor Tim Dunne will host the seminar, in the Sir Llew Edwards Building Terrace Room.

“Mr Šimonović’s appointment comes at a time when the world needs the Responsibility to Protect principle and actions more than ever,” Professor Dunne said.

During Mr Šimonović’s visit, Professor Alex Bellamy – Director of the Asia Pacific Centre for the Responsibility to Protect and UQ Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies –  will brief Mr Šimonović on the centre’s advocacy, policy and research activities and its partnerships in the region.
