An aspiring neuroscientist awarded a Westpac Future Leaders Scholarship will undertake pioneering research into the molecular basis of cognitive ability.

Esmi Zajaczkowski is undertaking her PhD at The University of Queensland’s Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), in the field of cognitive neuroepigenetics

“I am fascinated by our remarkable ability to learn and adapt on a daily basis, as well as the influence that experience has in shaping who we are,” Ms Zajaczkowsk said.

“My research will explore the impact that intercellular transfer of RNA, a carrier of molecular information, has on cognitive function.”

Ms Zajaczkowsk said the scholarship would fast-track her studies by allowing her to visit and collaborate with overseas scientists, and accelerate the translation of her findings to other aspects of neural function.

“I feel incredibly honoured and excited to be part of such an amazing program that brings together the future generation of forward-thinking individuals within Australia,” she said.

“By continuing to surround myself with the leaders that I aspire to become, I hope to grow as a scientist who can give back to the Australian and global community.”

Westpac Bicentennial Foundation CEO, Susan Bannigan, said Ms Zajaczkowsk was one of 17 exceptional Australians awarded scholarships for post-graduate study at leading Australian universities.

“All the 2018 scholars are passionate about one or more of the Foundation’s focus areas,” Ms Bannigan said.

“Westpac is proud to help realise their full leadership potential.”
