The University of Queensland has finished the 2018 Aon Uni 7s Series as runners-up after claiming a silver medal at the final round in Adelaide.

Team UQ needed to win the fifth-and-final tournament to have any hope of claiming consecutive Uni 7s titles, but was denied the gold medal by Griffith University.

Griffith scored a tense 26-19 win over UQ in an all-Queensland final to seal its third tournament win and the series title.

Griffith finished top on 94 points, ahead of UQ (86) and Macquarie University (82).

UQ coach Reg Tayler said he was pleased with his team’s efforts across the season.

"We were not able to achieve our goal of going back-to-back this year, but I am very proud of the effort from our girls and support staff,” he said.

“Coming second is a big achievement in a very competitive landscape that is the Aon Uni 7s Series.”

Team UQ finished the season with victories over University of Canberra (25-0), University of New England (26-5), Bond University (26-0), and tournament hosts The University of Adelaide (17-10).

UQ’s second placing was its fourth top-three result of the competition.

Hagiga (Haj) Mosby capped a stellar season by being named in the 2018 Aon Uni 7s Dream Team.

Tayler said the entire squad contributed to a successful campaign.

“A big congratulations to Haj Mosby on being selected in the Dream Team, as well as our Dutch internationals (Jannicke lJdens, Pleuni Kievit & Bodil Van Wijnbergen) for their commitment and performance,” he said.

“All members of our squad can hold their heads high as we look forward to 2019.

“I would like to encourage any UQ students out there that want to give Rugby 7s a go to contact the UQ Rugby Club for any information."
