An unorthodox documentary about carbon, which features one of The University of Queensland’s leading scientists, is hitting cinemas today and is set to spark conversations about the world’s future.

Astrophysicist Professor Tamara Davis AM from UQ’s School of Mathematics and Physics is amongst world-renowned experts, including astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe and others, that shine a spotlight on the least understood element on the planet, in the documentary Carbon: The Unauthorised Biography from Emmy Award-winning Australian company, Genepool Productions.

“Carbon is all around us – it makes up everything – plants, animals and ourselves, and going forward we need to understand more about this element if we’re going to tackle challenges such as climate change,” Professor Davis said.

“This documentary is a beautifully interwoven story of life and death – of carbon, of Earth, and of us.

“Carbon’s our ancestor - it gave birth to us, but is also going to outlive us.

“I love the fact that this very human documentary will appeal to non-scientists, and is a fun way for everyone to learn about the diverse roles of carbon in our world.”

Carbon: The Unauthorised Biography opens in cinemas across Australia today. For more information, visit www.thecarbonmovie.com.
