UQ named Australia’s best university

21 November 2023

The University of Queensland has been named Australia’s top university in the inaugural Best Universities Ranking by The Australian Financial Review (AFR).

The result highlights UQ’s excellence in both education and research.

UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry commended the AFR ranking for recognising the breadth of what universities contribute to society and the economy.

“At UQ, we celebrate teaching excellence and the quality of our student experience as much as we do research,” Professor Terry said.

“This result is a testament to the dedication of our teaching and student support teams, as well as our research teams across UQ.

“Our comprehensive areas of study, delivered by Australia’s most awarded university teachers, is enabling students with the knowledge, skills and perspectives for future careers.”

At the same time, UQ researchers are among the most highly cited nationally and this ranking recognises the breadth and impact of their research.

“Our partnerships with industry and government underpin our research endeavours to help solve major challenges facing our communities,” Professor Terry said.

The Best Universities Ranking recognises the diversity of Australia’s 40 universities using publicly available data.

Universities were measured across five categories including student satisfaction, research performance, global reputation, career impact, and equity and access.
