The University of Queensland, Netball Queensland and the Queensland Firebirds are marking a decade-long partnership in 2025 by increasing its impact on and off the court.

To celebrate the milestone, the UQ Firebirds Scholarship program is expanding from 4 to 10 scholarships for the 10-year anniversary.

UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said the $5,000 scholarship was first offered in 2019 to encourage Year 12 students passionate about netball to strive for success at university.

“We are thrilled to be expanding our annual offering to mark our enduring partnership in 2025,” Professor Terry said.

“Applications are now open and we encourage those particularly from regional, remote, low-SES, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds to apply.”

In addition to scholarships program, Professor Terry said the partnership reached across the state through regional carnivals and competitions such as the Vicki Wilson Championship and includes collaborations with the Firebirds' high-performance department to advance sports science.

UQ undergraduate and postgraduate students are able to gain experience working with professional athletes and in high-performance environments in areas like strength and conditioning, performance analysis, physiotherapy, marketing, and sports media.

“We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the past decade,” Netball Queensland and Queensland Firebirds Chief Executive Officer Kate Davies said.

“Our partnership has set a benchmark in the industry, creating a legacy of success and community impact that extends far beyond the court.

“We are excited to extend this collaboration into the future with a series of initiatives that will continue to inspire and empower young Queenslanders.”

The Firebirds’ first home game of the season against the West Coast Fever on Saturday 12 April will celebrate the 10-year anniversary and feature special merchandise and activities.

UQ staff, students and alumni can receive 10% off game tickets across the Firebirds’ 2025 Suncorp Super Netball season home games.
