The University of Queensland is celebrating Sustainability Week, which promotes sustainable transport, clean energy and – of course – getting down and dirty to plant native trees.

The annual event is about sharing ideas across disciplines and departments to inspire the UQ community to create change.

The six-day program has 35 events and includes a range of activities from workshops and seminars to classes on living sustainably — many of which were booked out weeks in advance.

Property and Facilities Division Director Mr Alan Egan said UQ Sustainability Week had something for everyone.

“For those wanting to get their hands dirty and make a positive impact for years to come, tree planting events will be held on the St Lucia and Gatton campuses,” Mr Egan said.

“Students and staff will meet to discuss ideas that could help make UQ a more environmentally sustainable university.”

Other highlights include tours of the impressive solar array systems at the St Lucia and Gatton campuses, with a free return shuttle service from St Lucia to Gatton.

Several cycling events, including Improve Your Ride and Back on Your Bike, will help participants explore the benefits of cycling.

Mr Egan said environmental sustainability was a key objective of the University.

“Sustainability Week is just one of many initiatives UQ is implementing to reduce its environmental footprint and raise awareness of the importance of environmental sustainability.”
