The University of Queensland has placed 51st globally and fifth in Australia in the QS World Rankings, released today (6 September).

UQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj, while acknowledging that minor shifts in individual rankings of the world’s more than 10,000 universities would occur from year to year, said the result continues to demonstrate the hard work of UQ’s staff and students, and research achievements.

“Having globally-recognised universities is incredibly important for Australia’s higher education exports,” he said.

“It’s also a great result for Queensland, which is looking to diversify its economy through greater innovation and collaboration between top researchers and industry.”

This year, UQ leapt 22 places to 55th globally in the Academic Ranking of World Universities, and placed number one in Australia in the Nature Index Top Academic Institutions.

“The rankings vary in how they weight different indicators of performance but when viewed collectively, point to UQ being a globally-competitive university,” he said.

“The fact that UQ continues to place so highly is a testament to our research and academic excellence.”

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016 places 11 UQ subject areas in the world’s top 30, and number one in Australia in two subject areas - Mineral Resources and Mining Engineering (10th globally) and Environmental Science (12th globally).

The University ranks 17th globally in Agriculture and Forestry and 18th in Education.
