29 October 2024

Researchers from The University of Queensland have secured more than $1 million through the Heart Foundation to advance vital cardiovascular research.

Associate Professor Joy Wolfram, Associate Professor Jonathon Fanning and Dr Mark Allenby will lead separate projects to strengthen understanding of heart conditions and develop targeted treatments to improve patient outcomes.

Future Leader Fellowship grants:

  • Dr Wolfram – to develop therapeutics to reduce heart inflammation following cardiac surgery and improve patient recovery outcomes.
  • Dr Allenby – to develop diagnostic models to predict organ and stem cell transplant complications in patients, which are often diagnosed too late.

Vanguard grant:

  • Dr Jonathan Fanning – to lead a feasibility study to improve understanding of heart complications and injury following non-cardiac surgery.

The UQ projects are among 66 initiatives funded this year by the Heart Foundation totalling $13.7 million.
