Law professor gains international citizenship award

University of Queensland Law Faculty Professor Kamal Puri has been honoured with an outstanding citizen award from the International Peace and Goodwill Foundation of India.
The awards recognise Indians for 'enriching human life, their outstanding achievements and in appreciation of their work in their chosen field of activity'.
The awards are given every two years and previous recipients include international cricketer Kapil Dev, leading Indian law professor M.M. Sharma, Hindi singer Anup Jalota and politician Maneka Gandhi, daughter-in-law of the late Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Professor Puri has also been asked to deliver Bombay University's prestigious Endowment Lecture later in the year, given annually by an internationally renowned law academic. He will speak on intellectual property law.
Professor Puri will time his lecturing visit to Bombay to coincide with the citizenship award ceremony in his honour, which will feature around 350 Indian dignitaries.
Professor Puri was also recently re-elected President of the Australian Folklore Association, at its 1996 international conference held on the St Lucia campus.
Professor Puri, a permanent resident of Australia, was born in New Delhi. He came to Australia in 1975 to undertake a law doctorate at the Australian National University and then taught in New Zealand for nine years. He joined the University of Queensland in 1989.
