Journalism graduates win news agency awards

University of Queensland graduates Kirsty Wallace and Kerry Taylor have won the state's only two journalism awards from national news service Reuters for excellence in journalism studies.

Ms Wallace, who completed a postgraduate diploma in Journalism in 1997, won her award for academic results in an international journalism subject and two print journalism courses.

She plans to work in the media and pursue further study.

Miss Taylor, who completed a bachelor of arts/ bachelor of commerce combined degree in 1997, has begun a sought-after cadetship with The Age in Melbourne.

She and University of Queensland graduate Stathi Paxinos are two of 10 journalism graduates from throughout Australia offered third-year cadetships with The Age.

Miss Taylor, who will work in departments at The Age including general news, sport and business, plans a career in investigative journalism and as a foreign correspondent.

In addition, Susan Maye, 24, has won the Department's annual Journalism Prize for the best overall grade point average in journalism subjects.

Miss Maye, who graduated with a bachelor of arts in 1997, wants to work in the media or communication industries.
