University opens up for Parents Day

2 February 1998

Up to 2000 parents of new students are expected to attend the annual Parents Day at the University of Queensland on Sunday, February 15.

The event is organised each year to give parents the chance to familiarise themselves with the St Lucia campus and gain information about the courses for which their children have enrolled.

The program begins with an organ recital in Mayne Hall at 9.30am. At 10am parents will be officially welcomed by the University Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Hay and the President of the Student Union, Bede Nicholson.

Morning tea will be served this year in the Great Court with entertainment by a flute trio from the University's School of Music.

Parents will then be escorted to venues around the campus where senior academic staff will give course presentations between 11.30am and 12.30pm and again between 1.30pm and 2.30pm.

Parents are also being encouraged to visit the Students Services Forum between 11.30am and 2.30pm in the Heath Room. Staff there will provide information and answer questions about a range of student services and facilities.

Topics covered will include courses and admissions, the library, computer centre and bookshop, student health and support services, sport and the chaplaincy service.

During the day the University's libraries and museums will be open, as will some of the cafes and shops on campus.

Invitations have been sent to parents of all new undergraduates and, to ensure the smooth running of the event, organisers would like all acceptances by Thursday, February 12.
